MANUAL LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE

What Is Manual Lymphatic Drainage?

Manual Lymph Drainage is a specialised hands-on technique that encourages the natural movement of lymph fluid throughout the body. Developed in the 1930s by Dr Emil Vodder, this therapy uses light, rhythmic strokes. This stimulates the flow of fluid in the lymphatic system and reduces swelling, helping the lymphatic system work more efficiently.  It is also gentle and relaxing.

Lymph is a clear fluid that collects waste from the blood, organs, muscles and tissues. It contains water, proteins, cellular waste, immune cells, bacteria, viruses and toxins. Specialised lymphatic vessels gather this fluid and transport it to the lymph nodes where it is filtered. Once cleaned, the lymph is returned to the bloodstream and the waste material is eliminated through the kidneys and liver.

When lymph nodes function correctly they help regulate protein levels in the body and prevent swelling. If the lymphatic system becomes compromised, fluid can accumulate and cause "lymphedema", i.e. swelling. This swelling can occur in the legs and arms, and many health conditions, injuries and surgeries can contribute to this. MLD is used to treat swollen limbs, and care is taken to avoid direct massage over the swollen area. MLD is one of several treatments used to address lymphedema, and is often combined with other treatments for best results. Further information about this can be found in the NICE guidelines.

WHY CHOOSE MANUAL LYMPH DRAINAGE?

The lymphatic system moves three to five litres of lymph through the body each day. It relies heavily on daily movement such as walking, stretching, yoga, swimming and deep breathing. Breathing techniques, such as diaphragmatic breathing, can enhance lymphatic flow. Hydration and compression therapy also play a role. Exercise and specific exercises can help redirect lymphatic fluid and should be done under professional guidance. MLD works alongside these natural processes to enhance the function of the lymphatic sysyem.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage uses light pressure with specific massage movements to stimulate lymph flow. Gentle massage is used to support the lymphatic system, especially in people with a compromised lymphatic system. Traditional massage uses firmer pressure, and targets muscle relaxation, whilst MLD is a specialised massage performed by trained therapists with the intention of reducing lymphedema.
