About Chiropractic Care for Babies & Children
People are often surprised that babies and children may need chiropractic care. Muscle and joint problems can start as a consequence of the positioning of the foetus in the womb (intra-uterine constraint), and through the birth process. As children grow older, other factors such as bumps and falls, or poor posture and sporting activities, can also have consequences for the musculoskeletal system. In teenagers, periods of rapid growth can contribute to aches and pains. In addition, some orthodontists recommend cranial work to support children under their care.
Chiropractors are trained to assess and evaluate musculoskeletal problems in babies and children. Chiropractic care for children includes a combination of gentle techniques to correct areas of the spine and limbs which aren’t working properly, and soft tissue work to relieve areas of tension. In addition, cranial work can contribute to easing tensions and creating a sense of balance in the body.
Babies experiencing muscle, joint and cranial problems can demonstrate this in many ways including:
- Feeding problems, e.g. latching on when breast feeding
- Discomfort in certain positions, e.g. lying on their back, or having their nappy changed
- Restricted movement, e.g. only being able to look one way or holding their head at a tilted angle
- General irritability and reluctance to settle
Many Midwives and Health Visitors are familiar with chiropractic care / cranio-sacral therapy for babies and children, and may suggest this approach for a variety of conditions.
Babies & Children at Haslemere Chiropractic
Michelle Carrington is our practitioner with a special interest in babies and children. She is an experienced chiropractor with post graduate training in paediatric care, a qualified cranio-sacral therapist, and a Mum who appreciates the ups and downs of being a parent!
All babies and toddlers who are booked in with Michelle will receive a blend of chiropractic care and cranio-sacral therapy according to their needs.
Michelle strongly believes that children should be involved in the choices they make about the care they receive as soon as they are able to understand a simple explanation, and that their visits are a comfortable and enjoyable experience for everyone. With teenage children of her own, Michelle is passionate about teaching teenagers about the importance of good posture and “habits for life” that will help protect them from future musculoskeletal problems.
Michelle is currently developing her interest in cranial work and dentistry, and is a Member of the British Society for the Study of Cranio-Mandibular Disorders. If your child is undergoing orthodontic work, and you have been recommended to support it with cranial work, Michelle will be happy to co-ordinate with your orthodontist.
If you would like further advice regarding whether chiropractic care might be of benefit to your child, you are welcome to come for a 20 minute chat with Michelle. Please call Reception on 01428 642778 to book your “Free Screening”.
