KEEPING ON TOP OF GERMS
We hope that a summary of our hygiene policy and some tips to boost your natural immunity will be of interest at this time. There is understandably concern regarding Coronavirus, or COVID-19 to give its proper title. At Haslemere Chiropractic Clinic we already have a rigorous hygiene policy in place and pride ourselves on keeping our facilities clean. However, in view of the current situation we have conducted a risk assessment and have implemented additional procedures which we hope will be of reassurance to anyone who is anxious about the spread of germs. As huge advocates of self-help, we would also like to share some tips about how to boost your immune system.
Protecting our Patients:
Sterilisation. Our usual hygiene procedures include sterilisation of the treatment table between patients, and a robust handwashing policy. In addition to our regular sanitisation procedures, whilst there is an increased risk of infection, we will sterilise the treatment room door handles between every patient. We will also sterilise the front door handles, the card machine, and all surfaces in the toilet facilities on a regularly throughout the day. We will provide hand sanitiser beside the card machine, and you are welcome to use the hand sanitiser in the treatment rooms.
Waiting Area. Spread of COVID-19 is through respiratory droplets, close contact with an infected person or direct contact with the secretions of an infected person. Although Clinic Reception is a place where close contact may be made with other people, most of our clients are healthy so you are unlikely to be waiting with someone who is unwell. However, if you prefer to avoid waiting with other people, ask the Receptionist to be shown to a place where you can sit on your own. She will be happy to help!
Our Team. Team members are always requested not to attend for work if they have a fever, or believe that they could be infectious with any bug. On occasion if the chiropractors have mild symptoms they do come in to work, and we call patients to offer the choice as to whether they attend for their appointment. Due to the current situation, we will advise all Team members not to come in to work if they have any respiratory tract symptoms. Please bear with us if we need to cancel your appointment for this reason.
Compliance with Public Health Policies. We will monitor and comply with all Public Health guidance in this changing situation. In the event that someone with suspected Coronavirus has attended the Clinic, we will follow NHS Public Health Advice. This would involve temporarily closing the premises to conduct a thorough clean. Anyone believed to be potentially affected would be contacted.
How You Can Help Us:
Comply with Government Advice. If you have recently traveled abroad, please follow UK Public Health advice. For further information, visit the NHS website.
Stay at home if you are unwell. If you are unwell, particularly if you are experiencing a fever and/or respiratory tract symptoms such as a sore throat or a cough, please delay your visit to our Clinic until you are feeling better. There is no late cancellation fee for people who cancel due to illness.
Personal Hygiene. Help us to maintain our standards of hygiene by washing your hands for at least 30 seconds after using the toilet facilities. Remember to put the toilet seat down before you flush the toilet to prevent air-borne droplets.
Cancellations. If you wish to cancel your appointment, we request that you provide us with the usual 24 hour notice or a late cancellation fee may be applied.
Boost Your Natural Immunity
It is important to take COVID-19 seriously, but also to keep a perspective on the level of risk.
For further information about Coronavirus, I found a blog written by an American paediatrician. This seems to be well researched, balanced, and helpful for dealing with some of the questions that people may have. Towards the end of the article is some great advice about natural ways to boost your immunity. Reducing the risk of all the winter bugs circulating at this time of year has got to be a good idea for all of us.
Natural Immune System Boosting Tips:
- Take Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Zinc and Omega-3 (fish oil or similar) as immune system boosters.
- Try to include in your diet foods to support your gut microbiome. This could include unpasteurised dairy, live apple cider vinegar and fermented foods. Try a salad for lunch with blue cheese and a dressing made from raw cider vinegar – that’s one of my strategies!
- Eat a “Rainbow Diet” full of fruit and vegetables of different colours to ensure a high level of anti-oxidants in your diet.
- Caffeic acid is known to have an effect against other strains of Human Coronavirus. It is found in turmeric, basil, thyme, oregano, sage, cabbage, apples, strawberries, cauliflower, radishes, mushrooms, kale, pears, and olive oil. There would be no harm in making a point eating of any of these foods.
- Drink plenty of fluids. A good gargle may help to dislodge any germs thinking about settling in your throat.
- Apply all the usual principles of a healthy lifestyle. Take moderate exercise, manage stress, spend time in nature and get plenty of sleep!
Please speak to any of the chiropractors if you would like further information about our hygiene policy, or self help advice.
